All the fishies not in the sea

Visited the North Carolina Aquarium today. An amazing place. I especially liked the sting rays and puffer fish.  They have the most amazing faces. I also liked the sharks.  Fish have interesting faces. Beautiful creatures.

The first 6 pics all taken in same tank with same settings on my camera. But as you can see there are changes in the color and clarity.

Carol said...

Under the circumstances Jan..those are very good pics. I love aquariums.

Carol said...

I knew you would love Marigold. TW and I did.

I went to bed a earlier than usual and woke up to a small thunderstorm very early..3a. It was quite a light show. I think it was more over TW. I woke up mainly because I had left my umbrellas open and was concerned they would take flight if the wind kicked up. No wind..thank God. I won't leave them open again though.

One of the routine guests on Morning Joe this morning mentioned having food stamp cards programmed where they are restricted to only purchase certain foods. That's been my thoughts for since I worked a a diabetes educator.

I really don't think if you need help with groceries..that you should be able to buy junk food and fatten up so we also have to pay for your hypertension, diabetes, and cancer..all the things that go along with a high fat, low nutrition diet. If you want to eat crap..you need to pay for it with money you earn. For years I have observed just how many people using food stamps to buy food are obese, seriously obese. Start watching, maybe it's just my neck of the woods. I've also observed the grocery carts and see all these sodas, chips and Twinkies. They also should not be used to buy crawfish, shrimp, steaks and other high cost foods.

And I was cool with what Mayor Bloomberg did about limiting soda size.

My ice cream is soooo good that it's dangerous. It's the best ice cream I've ever eaten. Too good!

Hope all of you are having a good day. We went to the aquarium yesterday. As we were driving there, I saw a Krispy Kreme store. John did a U-turn. We only intended to buy a donut each. But we got in there and they all looked so good. We wound up buying a box of 12 for 2 people. Now we have the box in the fridge with 8 donuts left -burp. I am sick of donuts. I think I will go down and see if any of the people here on the hotel staff would like them. Hate to see them go to waste.

Just finished doing some laundry. Almost everything was dirty. Time now for a walk on the beach. It is a cloudy, overcast day with the sun breaking through occasionally. Better put on some sun screen anyway. I have found 4 great shells and many that are nice but not spectacular. Yesterday was windy and there were lots of surfers with these kite-looking things they attached to their belts. With those kites they can go over the waves in any direction. Looks like fun, but must take a lot of coordination. There was a lot of wind yesterday so I guess it was a good day for that specific sport. John said he wants to do that - ha ha ha.

jan said...

Glad you are enjoying your ice cream Carol.

jan said...

I hear what you are saying about what people spend on their food stamp money on Carol.

I have to say that most people with a HS or less education do not know the effects of unhealthy foods and they really don't know what are healthy foods and how to prepare them. When I was growing up and before I had a nutrition course, I thought a hot meal was the best kind of meal no matter what was cooked in that hot meal. Sure, people hear the messages on tv about fast foods, but many of these people know nothing else.

jan said...

Role modeling and having parents who prepare healthy foods or serve healthy foods is probably the best way of learning what is healthy to eat. But, most people using food stamps did not have that kind of role modeling in their homes as kids.

On the road again tomorrow. We drive to Herndon Virginia to see John's daughter and family. I think it is a 6 hour drive. Need to look it up. We have a GPS thingee in the car. I am going to google map it and use GPS too.

Carol said...

Have a nice drive today Jan. That's close to DC? Are you going to check out DC? There's a lot of see there.

We had a good blow yesterday. I kinda thought that I must have a wind break in my back yard since every time TW was having a lot of wind..I saw nada. Well..I guess that wasn't the case.

I came home for lunch with this nasty bunch of clouds heading toward us from the north. It hit while I was home. The wind was blowing like crazy and it turned over my tomato and bell pepper plants. There's so much plant sticking out of those pots that it makes a good sail. Thought they were gonners. Caught about an inch of rain also. I've put so much work into those plants. Haven't even picked a tomato yet. I waited for the heavy rain to pass and went out to set them back up. I think they are OK.

TW has the flu or some other viral syndrome. Could be that pig flu since it seems to like this time of year.

Carol said...

I haven't mentioned it but I have been keeping up with and even watched most of the Yankees/Braves game last night. It happened to be on this MLBN channel. Not sure if that channel might not be one I got for a short time to make up for all the trouble Dish caused me.

Was kinda excited that they were leading but knew that could change in a minute and it did. I didn't even want to mention watching because I thought that I might jink them. I used to follow the Braves many moons ago..but only for a short period.

I was pulling for the Braves even though I don't know who any of them are. I do know most of the Yankees. When the Yankees got the bases loaded and Alex came up to bat..I thought..it's over now. And it was. One more chance tonight to see if they can keep from being swept. I think it's on ESPN tonight.

Carol said...

I'm kinda keeping up with the Sandusky trial. It's pretty disgusting. I don't trust juries anymore and half of them have ties to Penn State. Not sure how that will play. Anyone think he is innocent? He's seems to me like the poster child for child predator.

He'd probably even enjoy going to jail. It might be like putting a child in a candy store. There's always young guys who are ripe for exploiting in jail. Some are poor and some would do anything for some commissary money.

Carol said...

But if he goes to jail..there's also the possibility that someone could try to take him out. It could go either way.

Carol said...

Yesterday's burst of heavy rain gave me the opportunity to test my new bilge pump. It was enough to fill up my boat and threaten my new battery. I went out there and was holding my breath when I went to look. Whoopee..it worked this time.

Coreen said...

Good traveling Jan & John...stay safe on the roads...the I95 corridor is always full of traffic & would guess that you will be driving on it at some point between NC & VA...

Coreen said...

Naturally I am pleased with the way the Yankees are playing...right now everything is
coming together, but there is lots of baseball left...

And Carol, you have become indoctrinated in the NY way..you just can't help yourself....
and there are Yankee fans everywhere...even in the South...

Glad that Alex hit that grand slam...there is a love/hate
relationship with him in the NY media & fandom...no matter what he does, he is always expected to be
perfect...& there are those that are always critical of his efforts....

Sorry that you are not feeling well TW...I know the games have not
helped...&
Sorry your guys had to be on the receiving end of it...but remember
tomorrow is another day, another game, anoher chance...a long way to go...

Coreen said...

And here's an effort that deserves
praise...

Not a coffee drinker & not crazy
about Starbucks...even though there is one across the street in the center...but will make an effort to go there just because of
its attempts to bring jobs back to the usa...
& if these mugs are for sale will definitely buy some, just because!!!

And have you heard any of this from the media...not really...or from the handwringing contingents on both sides...no just more whining about the other guy & every word they say that may be construed in a negative way...it is so very tedious...
Starbucks turns to Ohio not China for coffee mugs

Coreen said...

Almost forgot about your thoughts on the nyc soda restrictions Carol...likely an ineffective measure since it really does little to solve the health problems i.e. obesity, diabetes...etc...

the populace does not want to change those unhealthy habits...I know it sounds soo republican, but until people take personal responsibility for their lives, no
effort by govt to impose it will work...unless all so-called unhealthy products are banned completely, the habits won't change...

and now those nyc board members who will decide are asking why not
other things...like popcorn, milk products such as milkshakes & other milk products like those frappacinos at DD & Starbucks...
NYC considers extending food ban to popcorn & maybe milkshakes

Coreen said...

Reminder...Dallas premiere tonight...that little old remote gets a workout...& I saw that the inventor of that gadget died recently...what a great invention...can'lt imagine tv w/o it...

Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) is on with Wendy Williams...she looks good...says she is 71...my how time flys...

I watched Dallas & Dynasty....

She says it starts with the next year of the old show, not a jump ahead to now...

jan said...

We are here.

Coreen, we were on I 95 and 295 and 495 and all the other 95's. It was about a 6 hour trip. Good to get to Herndon. I 95 was not bad. We were in the good lane. Several times the oncoming traffic going south was bad. We had a lucky day in terms of traffic.

Went by to see John's daughter and GD's first - and John's 1st wife is here too. It was a bit uncomfortable for John. He was a little nervous on the trip. But it will be fine.

jan said...

Sorry about the double exposure.

Carol said...

Glad you have arrived at your next destination safely Jan. Have fun and send pics. You don't even have to mention your ditto with the comments..when I see it..I'll take care of it. It just happens when there is a delay when you hit publish comment more than once.

Carol said...

I agree with supporting those who avoid getting things from China. I look at most of what I buy and if I can avoid getting something from China..I do. Sometimes you just can't avoid it. I'll pay more to get it from the good old USA.

Did you see that news story about the children's shoes that were loaded with lead paint? They just can't stop sending us toxic shit. Maybe they want to kill us and that's how they are going about doing it. Maybe China needs a few less people but they should keep their poison over there.

Carol said...

I have been planning on watching Dallas and have it scheduled to record already. I watched it years ago. Should be fun.

Tonight's Yankees Braves game is on ESPN at 6p our time. TW will be watching also. She couldn't get the channel on her cable last night so I kept her informed of the progress. I may be watching Dallas later unless there's a rout. I even recorded AGT last night so I could watch the game.

Carol said...

Coreen..we can't keep up with the Braves because there is nowhere to watch them most of the time. That's what's bad about baseball..you have to pay for special channels to watch it unless it's on occasionally. Like TW said..we both used to watch them back in the 80s on one of the Ted Turner networks.

Carol said...

As far as the soda size goes..maybe it's better to just get a smaller size and if you're still craving more..get another one. Sometimes people think they want the big one and just finish it to keep from wasting it. When TW and I went to the movie we split a large soda and didn't finish it. It's also hard to even hold those extra large soda cups without dropping them. I have long fingers and I even have trouble.

I had a rough day at work today. I was fighting the war on misinformation. First I get this guy in who said he needs an antibiotic to clean out his system. I gave him my antibiotic speech. I finally dug out of him..with a crow bar..that he was exposed to chlamydia and Trichomonas. His girlfriend told him she had it. When I learned that..I told him that I could treat him for that.

Then this guy comes in complaining of pain in his left arm and shoulder. I asked if he did anything to injure it..nooo. I asked if he had been working out..he said noooo. The muscles in his arms looked a little puffy and very firm. I kept digging and said I thought he had been working out and I really needed to know the truth that it could be dangerous. He finally admitted he did this tremendous number of push ups. I suspect rhambdomyolisis. That can be dangerous. I even have a warning on my exam room wall about overdoing exercise.

When they stress their muscles to the max it can cause muscle damage and the muscle cells release myoglobin which is very toxic to the kidneys and can even cause renal failure. I told him to drink tons of water and I would draw some labs in the AM. I warned him about misleading me and also about exercising to the extreme. I asked him how did he expect me to help him unless I know what I'm dealing with. He did apologize.

Then I had another inmate who was placed in isolation because he had poison ivy. One of my nurses was under the same mistaken thought that poison ivy lesions are contagious. That's a myth. The oily substance from the plant cause be spread but the fluid from the lesions is not contagious. It's just that it can break out and spread slowly so it that it appears to be spreading from the lesions. I told the nurse that and because her grandpa said it could..she didn't believe me. I found it on a fact sheet about the poison plants on a poison ivy..oak and sumac website and she still thought her grandpa knew best.

I just couldn't get out of that joint fast enough today.

jan said...

You have some amazing stories to tell from your work Carol. The first guy was probably embarrassed to tell you he had an STD.

jan said...

I agree with Coreen, the soda thing is like trying to drive in a railroad spike with a toothpick.

Carol said...

Well..I guess Bloomberg has one supporter out of three. Hey..I'm used to being odd woman out. Why do they want to keep people from smoking outside in many places where the secondary smoke isn't going to harm anyone but the smoker? Maybe it is to discourage smoking. Same difference in my opinion.

Carol said...

And maybe a toothpick can start a much larger structure. They aren't outlawing soda. I'd fight there since I live on them. I keep coke in business.

Carol said...

I do take the time to try and educate my inmates. It's a challenge but I hope they share what they learn with others. I think it's worth the effort. I do a lot of educating on antibiotics. Misuse is a serious problem that could end up killing us all. They just aren't coming up with new ones very often even though the old ones are losing efficacy fast. It's not just the result of an ignorant population..it's the result of lazy medical practitioners.

Carol said...

Poor Braves. Doesn't look like they will get a break. I'm recording Dallas.

Carol said...

One run behind and two outs. We need a home run now.

Carol said...

Oh..and the bottom of the 9th.

Carol said...

It's over. We've been swept. They had lots of chances in this series and they blew them.

I have a mystery. I have been feeding Fiddler on the back porch. She had a puffy area at the base of her tail and yesterday it was an open wound. It must have been an abscess and it opened and drained. The wound was so painful she couldn't even lick it last tonight. Tonight she can.

I wanted to keep her on the back porch until she heals but she would need to get out to potty. I found this litter I've had for years so I got a box and cut it down and put the litter in it. I wasn't sure if she would know what to do with it but as soon as I fixed it up..she jumped right in and did her business.

Since she had everything she needed..I decided to close her in on the porch. My washer and dryer are also there so I went out to check my clothes and she was outside. I can't figure out how she got out. I checked all the screens and they are intact. There's no way to get out without opening up the back porch door which was closed. How did she get out???? Cats are Houdinis.

Carol said...

Well..I just went back to the back porch and Fiddler was gone again. I did figure out how she must have gotten out. The screen door was not tightly closed like I left it. I had closed it tight but didn't latch it. She must have gotten her claws into the bottom of the door and opened it and let herself out. That's one smart cat. I wonder if she can let herself in also..if I leave the latch off??

jan said...

Fiddler is one clever cat.

Coreen said...

Did you have Fiddler checked by a vet the last time you mentioned I think was it a skin problem...outside cats get a lot more problems & have much shorter lives...

Coreen said...

Did you check out Dallas...

It has possibilities for keeping interest with the various plot twists...but it will depend on how central Bobby & JR are to the entire show...w/o them sparring with each other, I am not sure the newbies can carry it...

I liked seeing them again & remember just how manipulative JR was...even if they have aged...who hasn't...

Will a new generation be pulled in...have no idea...

Carol said...

Coreen..I did watch Dallas. I got a little confused at the end. Too many had a relationship with that one woman. I tried to form a like toward some of the characters and that seemed to change from minute to minute. I wanted them to go for the oil but that guy was suppose to be a villain. I didn't care for the cousin who wanted to make something out of the frozen methane. That sounded bad to me and it ended up being bad. Didn't care for the Patrick Duffy character. He's dumb not wanting to keep the oil. Can't see how that was ruining anything. Maybe if they had to inject salt water to frack even though they did mention it. Fracking is used to get deep gas out of shale.

I will continue to follow the soap opera.

Carol said...

I did buy a cat carrier but
Fiddler is not cooperative in getting her into it and it would stress her and me besides getting me sliced up.

She did grow all her hair back and was looking good. This puffy area at the base of her tail just came up recently. I will keep a close watch on her and take good care of her. The area may be the result of a cat war.

I can't put Fiddler in the house with Maggie.

Went to HS graduation for GD here in Virginia. As graduations go, it was pretty pleasant. I did nod off during the time grads called to stage- 500 students graduated. GD's last name starts with B, so after she went on stage, I nodded off for a time. Went out to dinner at a great italian restaurant - Margianni's I think. There were 7 of us and we ordered family style. Just got back -and I am stuffed. A beautiful day - cool, cloudy with sunshine during some of afternoon, no rain.

John's daughter and SIL will be chaperones at a party for the grads that will last until 5 in am - starts at 10:30. It is a good idea. Notion is to keep grads off the streets. Sounds like a great party too. I don't envy the parents however- staying up all night.

jan said...

GD graduated with top honors - 4.1 GPA. She is going to Barnard in NYC to school in the fall - majoring in English.

jan said...

off to bed. been a busy day and I am pooped.

Carol said...

I was just listening to Travis Rogers on Yahoo Sport's radio. It's his podcast. He was talking about Mayweather, the boxer, complaining that he doesn't like jail life and wants to go to house arrest.

I had to laugh because I get those complaints all the time. My inmates don't like our accommodations either. Some are even frequent fliers and they can't seem to figure out how to stay out of our uncomfortable establishment. I tell them that it must not be uncomfortable enough.

Carol said...

I had to go to a CEU meeting last night. I was forced to eat food from one of our best restaurants last night. I did skip the dessert so I could come home and eat my ice cream.

Carol said...

How much vacay do you have left Jan? I'm glad you're enjoying it.

jan said...

Today is last full day of vacation. Fly out tomorrow at 3 pm. Home about 7:30 - our time in Alb- 2 hour time difference.

Sounds like a nice evening last night Carol. I would have had dessert in restaurant and had the ice cream tonight.

jan said...

Actually glad to be going home tomorrow. Vacation has been fun and great to see family past days but miss home too.

It will be good to have Sunday to unload bags and do laundry and have some down time. Monday should be an easy day. Only need to check out next year's contracts and pick up mail. Tues and wed will be busy work days as we have bi weekly meetings both mornings, and I will have 2 students with me each day. I will have some health screenings in afternoons.

That is what I have planned. Problem is that plans have a tendency to get scrubbed as life often happens.

jan said...

Weather map looks like some rain in Colo. Hope that is true.

Carol said...

Welcome home Jan and John. I know how good it is to be home again also. Vacations are cool but they are a little work, living away from your home.

jan said...

Not home yet. Flying today. It has been a good one. Have enjoyed spending time with John's family. Got to know his former wife. She is delightful and lots of fun. I enjoyed time spent with her. This is first time we have been in her company for about 12-15 years.

Carol said...

Oh..hope you have a nice trip home.

I was busy yesterday. I ordered some okra from the jail farm and got it yesterday. I ordered a bushel of it to split with TW. They only got a half bushel because of the extra rain we got. That was actually enough. I spent most of the evening cutting it up and putting it up.

I also made some okra and tomatoes and that's what I had for supper.

Carol said...

Well..I'm sitting on my couch eating boiled shrimp and watching the US Open. This is living.

I was listening to sport's radio while out doing my chores this morning and heard this guy talking about how he wished Tiger would lose because of how unfriendly he is to the media and his fans. I decided that I agreed. I do hope he loses. I'm pulling for either of the two LSU guys..Toms or Peterson.

Carol said...

Also cheering for the little amateur Hossler...the kid with braces.
