I wanna new drug...

Paula Deen..the chef famous for her decadent..high fat.. southern recipes.. is getting a lot of flak for having hid her diagnosis of diabetes for three years.  She makes the big announcement soon after she’s made a reported 6 million dollar deal with a new diabetes medication.

I think it was an awful idea for the pharmaceutical company to select a chef so well known for her high fat cooking.. that if eaten with any regularity is very likely to push someone from a normal glucose to diabetes.. especially if there is any hereditary predisposition for the disease.  It’s almost as if they want to promote the idea of..don’t worry about how you eat..just take our new drug.

It’s a myth that you can take any medication used to treat diabetes without changing the diet.  Even if you can take sufficient doses of the medication to get the blood sugar down..you will most likely become more obese which will increase the amount of medication needed to control the blood sugar.   That will eventually result in no blood sugar control and the need for insulin.

We have become a culture of…I don’t want to change how I live..just give me some medicine that will make it OK. The big problem with that philosophy is that no medication is without potential hazard.  The new drug Ms Deen is promoting has some pretty scary potential side effects…caused thyroid tumors and thyroid cancer in some mice and rats (not necessarily a problem if you’re not a mouse or rat) and can cause pancreatitis especially if you have had that before or if you have gallstones..drink heavily..have high triglycerides.  I’ll just bet that Ms Deen might have at least one of those.

If Ms. Deen does develop one of the complications mentioned above and dies..it will have solved her diabetes problem..which would make the new medication very effective.

We were almost out of room for comments and I was in the mood for an editorial.

I did some research on the drug Paula is going to be promoting and it didn't impress me. It actually made me mad.

Oh..and with my Internet Explorer..I couldn't put up a new post. It wouldn't work. I finally had to download the Google Chrome to do it. I guess I was finally strong armed into doing it.

Carol said...

Jan..if you are OK putting your new baby pics up in a new post..please do it. My little editorial will still be there and I'd rather have some cute pics up to look at.

In case you might be interested in that diabetes drug that Paula is peddling...

http://www.novo-pi.com/victoza.pdf

It's an injection and it ain't cheap! And..it's "Not recommended as first-line therapy for patients inadequately controlled on diet and exercise.

Interesting that they even mentioned diet.

I'm ready to hear from the other team tonight at the SOTU.

It's so nice to see Ms Gifford. She looks great is a real walking miracle.

Carol said...

I'm hearing that hope and change..Maybe it's finally on it's way.

jan said...

There is no quick fix for problems caused by a lifetime of poor lifestyle choices. Unfortunately, that is what we all look for sometimes. I was so much better at eating healthy before I went through menopause. I married John when I was going through the " change" too. I just threw caution to the wind and started eating like he eats and that was my downfall. I still continue to exercise, but losing wt is difficult. I have just about given up, especially in light of other health issues. I too would like a quick fix, but know very well that does not exist.

jan said...

Ms. Giffords does look great. She does have a problem with balance and her speech is a work in progress. She is an inspiration.

Carol said...

Where has this guy been??

Carol said...

Don't trust that fracking for natural gas. Ya just shouldn't be able to fire up your faucet water.

Carol said...

If we could just get rid of those nasty political parties..we just might be able to accomplish miracles. We need to all be on the same team.

Carol said...

Jan..I'm serious about your putting up a new post with the baby's pics...if OK with the family. You can call it Hope and Change and it will fit right in.

Carol said...

Corruption of money in politics..now you're talking Obama. Lets fix it.

Carol said...

has he mentioned campaign finance reform???

Carol said...

Need a law to reverse Citizens United.

Carol said...

Can't say that Obama doesn't give a good speech. Just..often don't recognize the same guy after it.

Coreen said...

I guess you get more from his words than I do...nice delivery, but not sure there was any specifics...

I can tell you as far as the housing market...so far not any of the proposals from this administration has done anything
to resolve it...We know of no clients that have been successful
in renegotiating mortgages....

Naturally there was no specifics in what he said about how he was going to have those homeowners save
$3000/yr...

I guess I remain skeptical of all
the hype...

Carol said...

President couldn't fix the problems Mr. Repub spokesperson because you guys wouldn't help and he tried way too hard to cooperate with you.. to make friends.

Carol said...

Elizabeth Warren is going to be on the Daily Show tonight. If you miss it..it reruns later tonight and tomorrow..during the day.

jan said...

We watched the President's address. He is a great speaker. I wonder how much power he has to make the changes he says he wants to make.

Carol said...

I just love Lizbeth! She has so much passion! You can't see and hear her without loving her...unless you are the 1%. But they're only 1%..how can they win?? How can we let them win?? They are only 1%! We can fight them.

Carol said...

Jan..if it turns out to be a choice between the O man and the stooges..I'll go with the O man.

I understand that he may have been sincere with his hope and change but as I have seen with my Buddy..who refused to take the corrupt big money..there's no opportunity to be heard. Only money talks..and one must suck up to money to get the opportunity to talk. And in a first administration..if you want a second one..you have to play the game..to get the money.

Maybe..just maybe..in a second term..the hope and change will show up.

Carol said...

They're giving Obama a hard time over his joke about "crying over spilled milk". I thought it was cute enough. Was that actually true? Did farmers have to have a plan for that?

jan said...

Carol, I will post some pics in next day or so. Still suffering with this cold.

Coreen said...

What's going on about posting Carol, I don't have google chrome
so does that mean you can't put up a post?...

The top of my page says 'new post'
& when I clicked it brought me to
the page where I did put up new pics & posts...

Haven't tried it yet, hope it is
still there....

By the way, all the snow is gone
as of yesterday a.m., the fog & rain from the night before took
it all away...how good is that!!!

Carol said...

Having a frog strangler here. Fortunately the roof patching I did a little over a week ago is holding...so far.

Carol said...

Have you tried recently Coreen to do a new post? Since we had problems with the comments?

I got the page for a new post and the square we write in but couldn't get my cursor to click into the page so that I could write in it. Tried everything. Then I downloaded Google Chrome as a browser and it worked perfectly.

There has been a message right after I sign in that said that my browser..Internet Explorer.. would no longer support this blog. I'm telling you...they wanted me to switch to their browser.

Carol said...

Probably just makes it easier for Google to track my activities. They'll be bored.

It was easy to download their browser and they imported all my favs over to the new browser. So far..it hasn't been a problem. Does kinda piss me off though.

Carol said...

Well..I got two inches of rain in less than an hour but it's starting to slack off a little. There's a tornado warning a little south and east of here. Now which way do tornados move?

Well..Google said northeast..I'm OK.

Carol said...

I'm kinda starting to feel sorry for Paula Deen. Entertainment tonight showed her on a cruise..she hosted.. scarfing down a cheeseburger and fries..and dipping her fries in something white..think that maybe that was mayo??

If her new diabetes drug can help her.with that diet...we might all want to invest in it but I want to see some HA1C results. That's a test that shows an average of her last three months of blood sugars. And I'd need a before and after.

Coreen said...

Made in America...do you really think people care....

Here's a poll about Apple products...not surprising those
polled have no clue where those
iphones/ipads are made...& even
less surprising...guess what they
don't care!!!....they just want them...

Poll consumer confusion about where Apple products are manufactured

Coreen said...

And here is the lengthy NYT article
about Apple & its manufacturing
partners in China that accompanies tht poll....

And now tell me why obama had steve jobs widow sitting in the special section at the sotu...oh right she is the poster person for what he considers the 'good 1%'..

If you are one of the 1%, or the corporations that support my agenda
then you are not the enemy...sheer,
rank hypocrisy....

While everyone rails against the
rich repubs. & how awful the corps.
that they may run are...remember
the same goes for the dems. buddies...

Never forget,it is always about the $$$$....but if you are my 1%your
$$$ are ok, just the others are to be villified...as those nasty rich
1%...what a crock...
Apples ipad & China workers

Coreen said...

And this sums it up perfectly...the last paragraph of the Apple article states the true
reality of how things work...

"People like Ms. White of Harvard say that until consumers demand better conditions in overseas factories — as they did for companies like Nike and Gap, which today have overhauled conditions among suppliers — or regulators act, there is little impetus for radical change. Some Apple insiders agree.

“You can either manufacture in comfortable, worker-friendly factories, or you can reinvent the product every year, and make it better and faster and cheaper, which requires factories that seem harsh by American standards,” said a current Apple executive.

“And right now, customers care more about a new iPhone than working conditions in China.”'

Carol said...

Coreen..you say bad things about the Repubs..I agree..and the Dems..I agree..but you watch out.. if you are talking about my Buddy.. cuz you don't have any data to support that. If you have facts..spit them out sister but don't just lump him in with the others crooks. Play fair here!

Buddy has already shown that he is NOT your typical politician. Check out his business practices..he has a record. He has a big bank and took no bailout money..foreclosed on no mortgages. I've followed and studied him ever since I've heard about him. I'm a little less susceptible to manipulation than the rest of the pod people.

He also has a record of refusing to take the corrupt corp money even when it has kept him out of the game!

Carol said...

I liked Obama's speech the other night but just like Bill Maher..those Repub specimens would send me running back to his loving..but not trusted.. arms. And if I had to do that..I wouldn't turn my back on him!

What Obama said the other night was interesting..but what took him so long??? And there were things he said that I wasn't so comfortable with.

I don't trust many politicians but I also refuse to assume that are all crap before I know the facts. I'm still digging thru all the shit looking for that pony.

Carol said...

So far..the closest thing I can find to that pony is Roemer even though I realize he isn't even in the race.

Carol said...

And the MSM..there are collaborators in all this mess.

I've come to only trust Stewart and Colbert but I still fact check them. I've learned more from them in a short time than all the others.

Carol said...

On the Daily Show..the other day..they had some info on those tech plants in China.

Those workers..making Iphones.. are warehoused in institutions..work long hours..paid very little..they even have nets set outside the windows to catch the jumpers..those trying to off themselves because of the horrid working conditions.

I kinda wondered if it wasn't some joke. If it was it wasn't in good taste. I Googled it..it wasn't a joke.

http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/02/ff_joelinchina/all/1

Interesting that I haven't seen anything about that from the MSM. I do enough channel surfing..you'd think if it was on TV.. I would have come across that kind of info somewhere.

Carol said...

Here's another attempt at that link

http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/02/ff_joelinchina/all/1

Carol said...

That's weird..every time I try to cut and paste that link..part of the address is left out.

Try Googling this article

1 Million Workers. 90 Million iPhones. 17 Suicides. Who’s to Blame?

Carol said...

That article was written Feb. 28 2011. Kinda took a while for any of the media to fill us in.

Coreen said...

Carol, obviously we are on different wave lengths...the 'made in america' Apple post is to address why that is not happening, why it is not going to happen...

It has nothing to do with buddy roemer...other than he wrote on his site that things should be made in america....which I already said I agree with big time...but it is not going to happen...

Consumers...you, me, everyone wants the 'stuff' they want &the & companies want to
provide the products & make a profit...so they will find the cheapest source of production/labor
& that has sadly long ago stopped being the usa...

For me, it started with the car
industry...when americans started buying into the hype that foreign
cars were better & started buying them & on top of it, trashing the american made cars...& saying foreign cars were better, they lasted longer, didn't have to repair, yada, yada, yada...that was
the beginning of the loss of american mfg...& now we have walmart style marketing everywhere with little to no made in america things....

I have not heard any pol...come out with any honest statement of how to get 'made in america' back...mainly because they all know
that boat left the dock a long time ago...& its not coming back...

As for your buddy...his views are essentially republican views...you
don't seem to think so, but that is what I see...I don't have any feeling about buddy...good or bad...he is not going to be
in a position to effect anything so his views are not relevant for me to consider...

Again I will say I resent
the class warfare being pursued by the president & his minions...that is also why I
mentioned Apple...he used the widow. a 1%er
to push his agenda...like I said, the image projected is
some 1% are good, but the others (that are not his allies/donors) are the
bogey men...I find that disgraceful...it is leading the country down the absolute wrong road to pit people against each other based on their economic position in life...

Carol said...

1 Million Workers. 90 Million iPhones. 17 Suicides. Who’s to Blame?

Coreen said...

Carol, again I guess I am not being clear...

The NYT article is about the apple/china production...

And it would not surprise me if your news sources...mentioned it because of the NYT piece...

Carol said...

There will always be the poor and pitiful. We'll either take care of them or they will steal it from us. That's the way it is..take your pick.

But there is a problem that too many in the middle class are falling into the poor class..some are to blame for that..poor choices..wanting more than they could afford. Some..are not to blame.

And not all rich people are evil and greedy but there are a significant number who are. They have more money than they could ever need or use but will still rape the rest of us to get more..more..more.

Included in that evil/greedy category are those who send the jobs overseas..and hide their money.. overseas. IMO..they are traitors to our country.

Some of those creeps who send the jobs overseas are spending millions..probably as much..or more.. than they save.. to get their crooked politicians elected so they can continue to screw this country by sending the jobs and hiding their money overseas.

Carol said...

Actually Coreen.. my boys mentioned that China stuff before the NYT wrote that article.

Often I find they are the first to bring things up..before the MSM talks about it. It's like...once the cat is out of the bag..the MSM might as well talk about it.

Carol said...

All this talk of class warfare..is just an excuse for the rich to use to keep the rest of us from complaining about their not paying the same percentage of their income in taxes. Their motto is..we're rich..don't bitch.

And I don't think people should be punished for being rich...but maybe for how they got that way..if it was on the back of the rest of us. The problem is that they aren't punished. Too many rich crooks have gone un-indicted.

It's not fair for people who are fortunate enough to have all their money in investments to pay a lower tax rate on their income than those of us who work our asses off for our money. Doesn't make sense to me.

I really think I would like the flat tax idea..maybe I don't understand all the ramifications but I'm open to hearing about them.

Carol said...

I watch the debate and read my Buddy's tweet responses. Some are quite amusing.

He may call himself a Republican but he's way left of Obama. Don't really understand that.

Governor Buddy Roemer's Tweetbate

Carol said...

Why do they continue to call Newt..Mr Speaker..shouldn't he be called Mr. Ethically Challenged Speaker..to be more exact?

Carol said...

Buddy's flat tax idea is 17% flat tax with those making less than 50000..no taxes and only pay on the amount over 50000.

Remember I have no commas on this laptop.

Carol said...

Roemer tweets

Newt is vying for a position as head of the Pants On Fire lobby

Carol said...

I think all these fools don't have a clue about healthcare or health insurance. I think Mitt has the most knowledge about insurance.

Carol said...

Often..Mitt has to deny his better ideas just because they might be a little similar to what Obama does..just to keep those other morons off his ass. Too bad.

Paul talks about when he was first practicing medicine..and there was no Medicaid and Medicare..it was also a time when the patient could bring a mess of turnip greens or a chicken to the Doc and he was glad to take it in exchange for his care. Can you imagine that happening these days?

Carol said...

Can't wait to hear how Newt's wife..Ms. mannequin will make a good first lady.

Carol said...

Sounds like maybe their wives would have made better candidates than their husbands have.

Carol said...

Mitt said he has never voted for a Democrat if there was a Republican on the ticket. If he lived here in Louisiana..I guess he would have voted for David Duke..the KKK republican.

Buddy tweets

"I'm not about partisanship. I'm about unity. Bringing Americans together. Finding solutions. Country before party"

Carol said...

Well Castro doesn't care for these guys either. What did he say.."...the greatest competition of idiocy and ignorance"? I guess it takes one to know one.

Carol said...

How would Newt's religious beliefs impact his decisions in the office of the president?? I'm quite sure he's banking heavily on that...forgive us our trespasses..past.. present.. and future. God maybe will..but the rest of us...eh..not so much.

Carol said...

Elizabeth Warren was on "The last Word"..CNN. She was great..again. If you missed her..there is still time to record or watch it later.

Carol said...

Newt insisted that the audience be able to vocally express their feeling during the debate. He got what he wished for.. along with some hearty boos. Love it.

Carol said...

Who wants to be in on Newt's 13000 people colony on the moon? It will be up and running by his second term. He promised the peps in Florida.

Not me..I like trees. I would recommend that those people who were cheering him in South Carolina get to be first in line.

Carol said...

I wonder if these debates are starting to give Jersey Shores a run for their money.. in the area of numbers of viewers? I think Snookie must be helping Newt with his debate strategies. If not..she missed a good chance.

Carol said...

Darn..I tuned into the debate late and missed the throw grandma from the country part. Sounds like it might have been the highlight of the debate.

Carol said...

Jan..let me know when Idol gets down to a group of reasonable participants. I don't like the mean..silly..crazy part of the show. Already got that covered by watching the debates.

Carol said...

If a patient..seeing a shrink..would mention anything close to that moon colony plan that Newt talked about at some event..he would leave the office with a handful of scripts. All kidding aside.

jan said...

Carol, I am LOL at your comment Newt made about going to the moon and people in Carolina be 1st in line. Love that.

jan said...

I think most of auditions for Idol are over. I enjoy this part. This group of judges not mean as when Simon was on. They are getting a little "testy" as these auditions come to an end. I do think these judges are much more fun than the ones on X factor. I like Jennifer Lopez and Stephen Tyler. Simon Cowell is too serious - and not much fun. They are always bleeping S. Tyler. Jennifer is very kind to the contestants. Randy Jackson is the only mean one and his is much nicer than before.

jan said...

I guess I should start watching the debates. Could be fun.

Coreen said...

Paula Deen's sons not happy about her endorsement...but in the end...Have no idea if this is true or simply hype for the different shows the sons are involved in...
Paula's endorsement almost started family war

Carol said...

Read the article Coreen. Her kids said she was already on some diabetes med that was working fine but she changed when she made that endorsement deal.

I told you it was expensive.. her kids said it was $500/months. Those hot off the press drugs are usually very expensive and often not any better than what they already have available on the market.

After reading about it I wasn't impressed. It's also an injection so factor in the cost of supplies needed there.

And I guess they have to charge more because besides being new.. with all those scary potential side effects..they may need the money to pay for the class action lawsuits.

What's sad is that because Paula Deen is peddling it..people might think you can eat like she cooks and take the drug she takes and be A-OK.

Victoza is in a fairly new classes of drugs used to treat diabetes called GLP-1 agonists. I'd certainly wait until they worked the kinks out. Here's an article from your newspaper about them.

Diabetes Drug Injected Weekly Wins F.D.A. Approval

And to be fair..there is one plus for this new drug..it seems to reduce a person's appetite.

Carol said...

Jan..I'm not sure you would find those debates fun. I'm a tad on the warped side and I haven't really watched any of the entire debates. Can catch most of them on the news and the best parts on the comedy shows.

If you can find a better source for comedy..stick with it.

Look who spent how much lobbying on 2011:

Lobbying..Top Spenders in 2011

Notice how much was spent by doctors..insurance cos and pharma.

Notice #2 spender.. GE..they made 14.2 bil in profits..spent in excess of 26 mil lobbying but then..they didn't have to pay any taxes in 2010. I don't get it.

General Electric Paid No Federal Taxes in 2010

Another interesting factoid..the CEO of the company was Obama's adviser on business and job creation??? But under that dude's leadership.."GE laid off 21,000 American workers and closed 20 factories between 2007 and 2009. More than half of GE's workforce is now outside the United States."

What in the heck do you think he is advising Obama on???

Carol said...

Erin Burnett on CNN just said that SuperPacs will spend close to 1 billion on this campaign.

And I noticed that Obama made no mention of SuperPacs in his SOTU address. Probably because he'll get as much from them as all the stooges put together.

Carol said...

I have a few more recommendations for that lunar colony.

Carol said...

Short article but sums it up..

Given the current disappointing field of presidential contenders, Buddy Roemer might not be a bad choice

Coreen..I realize that Buddy is a pipe dream. He's way too good of a choice to ever become a reality even though if people actually knew about him and his ideas..he'd very likely be very popular. Especially in this day and age. Even though it would be a long shot..it could be possible.

Roemer calls himself a Republican but I can't figure out why. Obama calls himself a Democrat and I often wonder why. Those party labels are too deceiving.

Roemer is as socially liberal as Obama is but his best issue is getting the corrupt money out of politics and I believe that is our biggest problem and there is no hope for ANY change until we do. We are just wasting lip service on the other issues.

Even if that may be almost impossible to do..you have to start with a strong stance on that issue. And Roemer lives by his stance on that issue which none of the current candidates do.

Roemer even might be a safer bet for the environment. In the SOTU speech..Obama was bragging about the technology used to get natural gas out of shale. He didn't mention fracking but I got the impression that that is what he was talking about. Roemer doesn't like fracking he prefers deep drilling. I don't like fracking. I think it's dangerous to the earth.

I don't think that healthcare reform really even came close to fixing that problem. Roemer liked the parts that were good but thinks it needs to be much better. Many of the people who were in a bind before.. still are. I know several of them.. personally.

Carol said...

Yes..I think that Obama seems like the better choice of all our current options but is he really much different than Romney?? He's not as rich..is that better?

Obama and Romney are both hypocritical. Obama is not quite as obvious about it as Romney is but you do have to look at Obama's actions..not his words. He's financed by the same people..they are going to finance both sides..cover all their bases.

Obama has said one thing then did the other. He picked advisers from the wolf pack. Now he promises to take care of that. Yeah..do we really believe that? I'm not so quick to.

So far..Obama does have Romney beat in the.. be humane to dogs.. department. I don't think Obama would strap Bo on the roof of his vehicle but we really don't know that??

Bo gets to fly when they go on vacation and there's plenty of room in the plane. And I'm sure Romney did think that Seamus was having a blast up on the roof of his station wagon.. in all that fresh air. At least they stopped and gave him a bath when he pooped himself. Small gesture even though he was now on the roof..in the wind..and wet. God..it's amazing how stupid humans are.

Carol said...

SF is now approaching his final journey. He never really recovered from the surgery. I knew that would probably happen. He can't eat and it's just a matter of time. I haven't mentioned it..too depressing.

When you see me ramble on about crap..which I know I have..you can bet there's something way more important that's bothering me.

Carol said...

Something that I have occasionally pondered but don't have enough of an understanding for even a good ponder is...if we cleaned all the corruption out of the government..would the financial house of cards all come tumbling down? That just might be the elephant in the room that no one wants to contemplate. Has anyone ever heard anything to that effect? Has anyone ever pondered that?

It might eventually come tumbling down anyway. The housing market did.

jan said...

Carol, so sorry to hear about SF.

We are having plumbing problems again. It never ends with an old house. Waiting for plumber. Can't take a shower. I may go to the YMCA and take a shower.

jan said...

Dang, posted that last comment twice.

Carol said...

I took care of the extra post Jan. Hope that was OK with you.

Carol said...

I sympathize with your plumbing problems. I have an electrician coming Monday to see if he can figure out if it is the wiring or the hot water heater that has the problem at my house. I don't want to get another one..get it put in..and still have it flip the breaker.

I've consulted many different people and half say it's the HWH and half say it might be the wiring. Everything that could be a problem on either sides of the wires has been changed. None of my problems are ever simple ones.

If it ends up being neither..I'll have to hire a ghost buster. There are other strange things going on over there.

jan said...

Sorry about your electrical problems. Hope it can get fixed.

glad you deleted the extra comment.

Watching ice skating at the olympics. I think I prefer the ice dancing to the figure skating. The ice dancing is prettier and there are no jumps. There are too many jumps and they are too hard in the figure skating. They should change the name to "ice jumping." The focus anymore is just on the jumps. The men do much better in the jumps. Their legs are more muscled.

jan said...

Duh! this isn't the olympics. The skating is national championships. oh well! Flubbed up again. who cares. The young woman who got 1st place did a beautiful job. Her name is Ashley Wagner. It was fun to watch - but I still feel too many jumps. Ashley Wagner didn't flub up a single jump.

jan said...

Got plumbing fixed. I think we need to get one of those "snakes." On the other hand, if we tried to do any handyman jobs one of us would wind up in ER.

Carol, the problem today and last weekend was crud that stopped things up. It was not tree roots.

Crap, I did it again. Not to worry Carol - I don't care.
