First, New Haven harbor looking
toward the city of New Haven from Morris Cove
section...When I took these, the wind was blowing straight into the shore, we were at
a restaurant along the shore...

In the 3rd pic in the right corner near the
trees you can see the top of the bldg in downtown New Haven where I go for bankruptcy hearings...

Then a couple of weeks later, came the Nor'easter that dropped 6" snow just before
Halloween...Hope you can see the snow falling,
the flakes were really big, & it came down
heavy & fast...the next day the sun was out...& the trees were heavy with snow & leaves, rarely see snow & leaves covered trees
together...

Coreen, gorgeous pictures. You live in a beautiful region. I know your weather is bad sometimes, but what scenery. You are wise to get you a good generator.

jan said...

Carol, how cool that the sportscaster read your e-mail on his show. Send us the e-mail. Is that a local, regional, national show?

jan said...

I woke up without the top of my feeling like it was going to dis-engage this morning - the first morning in 6 days. I did not start the indomethicin. Just doing ibuprofen and tylenol when I need it and trying to go longer time between - weaning myself off. I do now think it is just a really bad migraine.

Carol, I had migraines when I lived in LC. Not often, usually related to my menst cycles. They began to get worse after I began menopause. I can usually track them to stress releated stuff. this was worst I have ever had.

jan said...

"top of my head" LOL

jan said...

My mother had migraines. My DIL with Br CA has them and so does her younger son.

jan said...

None of my sons have migraines and John does not have them. Neither of my siblings had/has them either.

jan said...

Coreen, I can see the snow flakes in 2 pics.

jan said...

Is the last pic behind or in front of your house?

So glad I no longer live in Okla. My sis was terrified the other night when the 5.6 earthquake hit. She was in bed and she said the bed started shaking and there was a loud roar. She jumped out of bed and didn't know which way to go - in or outside - of what room to get in.

No wonder the govt gave OK to the Indians. You all know that before statehood it was called "indian Territory" In about 1838 - the govt moved 5 tribes out of the southeast into OK. Every time my dad used to hear about - he got mad - I can hear him now - Those "sums abitches" he would say. I was reading about the history of the trans-location of the 5 tribes the other day - and it was a travesty.

jan said...

A niece posted this on facebook:

Tornado warning: Seek shelter in the interior of your home
Earthquakes are coming: Avoid the interior of your home. Go outside if possible.
Lightning is forecast: Avoid high ground
Flash flood warning: Avoid low ground
It is hailing: Avoid open areas
Parts of the state have received 5 inches of rain in past 5 hours, however a burn ban is in effect.
WELCOME TO OKLAHOMA

Great pics Coreen. Brrrrr.

I'm sorry that the new pic format on this blog doesn't allow us to blow them up as big as we used to be able to.

I'm trying to figure out what they little figure is in pic #9. And what those rows of snow are?

Carol said...

Jan..I'm glad your headache is gone. Big sis had some right after she went thru menopause and I have those weird visual migraines but no one else.

Carol said...

Jan..it's Yahoo Sport's Radio and nationally syndicated. There's even a station in your town. 1150 AM. You could have heard my email yesterday if you were listening. Yeah..like you would listen to sports radio. That's what I would have said about me before.

I've been listening to some of these guys when I'm in my vehicle. Even though I'm not a big sport's fan I find some of the guys entertaining. And I listen for info on my teams.

When something they were talking about was particularly entertaining I would come in and listen on my computer. And it's made me a little more interested in sports.

I particularly appreciated the way some of the guys handled this child abuse scandal. Even though sports are their lives..they put sports second to what went down in Penn State.

And I really believe that there is much more to this story than we have heard or that might even ever come out. I can't see how one perv..alone..could have affected all those years of cover up by so many people including university officials..law enforcement..government agencies. I smell a much bigger story.

Carol said...

Why were so many men afraid to stop one guy?? That's the million dollar question.

Carol said...

You do know that there was one district attorney who investigated the Sandusky scandal years ago that disappeared.

jan said...

HA was back with a vengeance this morning at 4:00 am. Got up and took ibuprofen.

Now watching the Penn State football team going on the field.

Carol said...

Sorry about your headache Jan. You have checked your Bp? A friend of mine, who takes Bp meds, recently had her's go out of whack asll of a sudden.

Have you ever had these headaches last this long? Hate to say it again but maybe a CT might be in order if they continue. Check with your Doc.

Carol said...

This AM went out to blow some leaves and noticed a water leak under the camp. It was coming from the hot water pipe under my kitchen sink. Fortunately I called my neighbor and he came right over and fixed it after I went and got the parts. Then the drain pipe got jarred loose and water was leaking again. That was real easy to fix.

Carol said...

I'm also watching Penn State. I bet they get their biggest viewing audience ever today and some companies pulled their advertisements during the game. Not a good move.

Penn State is not responsible for this scandal. Those who were involved were dealt with. I do feel for the students.

This scandal is a problem across this country as evidenced by the fact that 1 in 3-4 women and 1 in 6-7 men have been the victim of abuse. And many people including parents turn a blind eye to it. Maybe this will open all of our eyes and make us realize that it doesn't go away if we ignore it.

jan said...

Carol, I hate having a plumbing problem. Great you have a neighbor to help with that. Glad you got it fixed. Good thing you went out to blow some leaves.

jan said...

I think people in this country are much more aware of sexual abuse of children since some Catholic priests have been found out. People often don't believe kids when they tell what is happening to them. Now that these kids have grown up and are grown adults and so many are coming forth - then other adults are becoming more aware of how vulnerable children can be. Also the laws have become more strict about reporting any kind of child abuse.

I don't know why McQuery did not go further and contact police. It could be everyone tried to hush him up. I do know that some institutions and agencies have had policies that if you suspect or witness child abuse, a person is to contact their superior or immediate supervisor and see what the plan is for handling it. I bet a lot of agencies/institutions are going to take another look at their policies on child abuse.

jan said...

The important thing here is that McQuery witnessed actual sexual abuse of a kid by an adult- that is so significant.

jan said...

Carol, my BP has been normal all along - although it is higher than usual for me. I think that is probably due to the pain. I usually have a lower than average BP. Doc did a complete history of my HA - and he thinks it is vessel dilation or a cluster HA. He is going to check it again on 11/28 and if I am still having HA's he is going to do an MRI or something else. He said he does not think it is a mass. Neurologically, I seem to be just fine.

Anonymous said...

Sorry about your continuing headaches Jan,hope you find out why soon...

Carol, I had a lot of difficulty in putting the pics up, had to re-register (though I tried that last time I was locked out)& though I was able to post through google when I finished, I can't again, keeps erasing what I post...

As far as what is in the pic, its my neighbors
kids rolling snow down the hill in their front yard after the storm...the snow was so heavy, they just started rolling it down like a log...

Carol said...

Jan, Mc Queary has taken a lot of flack for how he handled seeing what he saw. I spent a quite a bit of time pondering his response and I want to be fair.

We just don't know the circumstances. To truely evaluate and criticise his response we would need to know all the circumstances. We're not all heros even if we would like to think we could be. There are actually very few heros.

A lot of heros are dead, both literally and figuratively. Doing more could very well have undermined his career at that university..and it probably has now and maybe forever.

He did go to the Grand Jury and describe it all, which is what has prompted all the criticism of him. He could have lied to save himself. He might have saved himself if he would have not described exactly what he saw. His testimony might be the strongest evidence they have.

Like you said Jan, new policies to protect the whistle blower needs to be implemented. I have this feeling that the powers that be in the athletic department already knew about Sandusky and were covering for him for a good while prior to what McQueary witnessed.

Carol said...

Thanks for your explanation Coreen. I didn't see you slip in earlier.

Carol said...

Western Kentucky, a small school with an unranked team looks better against LSU than Alabama did last week. Hmmmm. They are tied up 7-7 and LSU was suppose to be a 41 point favorite?? I hope they don't do the same thing the Saints did against the Rams.

I'm also watching and enjoying the Arkansas/Tennessee game Jan.

jan said...

Thanks for kind words Coreen and for your suggestions Carol on my headache. Doc kept calling them headaches - to me it is one long continuous HA with relief in the middle of them from meds.

The thing about the NSAID's is that when you take them over time - you get rebound headaches. I am wondering if that is what is happening to me. I was reading on google about the different kinds of headaches. I cannot figure out what kind this one is -cause there are several symptoms that fit it. I went to the pool this afternoon and swam for 30 min. After that I got in the "therapy" pool which is shallow and very warm. I just floated on my back for a while to try and relax. I think I have been very tense lately. I have been able to go without any meds now since about 10 am. when the HA is really bad it takes ibuprofen to get relief. If it is not too bad, tylenol will work.

jan said...

We are watching the AR vs Tenn game too. AR doing good - John happy.

jan said...

Cannot find LSU game Carol. Bummer.

Carol said...

Well, I guess it took LSU a little while to rememeber what the outcome of the game was suppose to be. Didn't quite make the 41 point spread though. I fell sleep before they remembered.

Carol said...

Didn't see you slip in earlier either Jan. Yes..I've heard of rebound headaches but you have to be taking quite a bit of the NSAIDS for that and from what you say..I don't think you overdo it.

Maybe you should try a little coffee. Remember when they use to have caffiene in products used for migraines? Caffiene is a good cerebral vasoconstrictor.

Carol said...

I am reading this blog that has multiple posts about the disappearance of the DA who originally investigated the Sandusky case years ago but refused to indict. It's really interesting. I hope the FBI gets involved in that Penn State investigation. I do think it is much bigger than we might imagine and might involve some powerful people.

jan said...

Carol, I don't drink coffee - I drink tea. I have been drinking tea morning and afternoon and that seems to help.

Woke up this morning and no HA. I am not going to get excited yet. I did try my best to "zone out" yesterday. Getting plenty of exercise and not watching too much TV works well for me. They have Yoga at the YMCA and I think I will start going. I may try meditation too. I have heard both of these are good for prevention of pain associated with arthritis.

jan said...

I did see where LSU won their game yesterday. Ark won too. Texas lost to Missouri.

jan said...

My DIL finished her radiation this past week. I talked to then yesterday and she did well. So glad to get it finished. They put this funny looking thing in her breast and blew it up like a balloon. It had several wires in which the radiation was focused. They took it out Friday afternoon. She was so glad to be able to take a shower. Her oncologist is recommending a drug for her to take but she is afraid of the side effects: headache (she has migraines) and other SE's that are not pleasant. I will find out the name of the med this coming week.

Carol said...

So glad your DIL is doing well Jan. We will continue to keep her in our prayers. That radiation therapy didn't sound too easy.

Worrying about her might be one of the causes for your headaches. Would certainly give me one.

Carol said...

This Saint's/Atlanta game has been tough to watch, tough on the heart.

They're tied up and in overtime. We again lost the coin toss, have for the last 11 tosses so the Falcons go first and it's first team to score who wins.

Carol said...

I can finally breath easy again.

WE WON!

Carol said...

That was the most exciting game I've seen this year, a little too exciting.

Carol said...

Well the Penn community where that perv Sandusky resides keeps waving a red flag saying we are sick to the core. I don't want to call it the Penn State scandal even if many involved hid out at the University. That's unfortunate.

I was complaining that the perv had only a $100 thou bond. Come to find out he didn't even really have that. It was unsecured, meaning that he didn't even pay a penny to get out. Seems the judge is a buddy of his, she worked with him at the charity where the perv picked his victims.

And I do believe that DA who disappeared was connected to this scandal. It's just too big a coincidence.

Carol said...

Ready to dance and I forgot to warm up.

Carol said...

DWTS blog mentions that maybe one of our favs might be in jeoparty this week since CA has the hots for Rob and Len for Hope.

I'll try to remember to vote tonight.

Carol said...

That's pretty sad that an athlete, Hope, is shooting up her joints to dance in this competition. She'll probably need a joint replacement before long. Also it's a good way to weaken those tendons, makes them brittle.

It sounds like that joint is already held together with pins.

Cortisone is a wonder drug...when the benefits outweighs the risk. When it doesn't...it's a horrible drug. It's used way to often and it keeps those orthopods in the big bucks replacing joints..not to mention the fluid retention, weight gain and even diabetes it can cause.

Carol said...

Well, the judges didn't give Hope much hope with those scores. I guess they want her out next. We'll see how Rob rates.

Carol said...

And JR spains an ankle...yuk. I guess he'll get numbed up also.

Carol said...

It may come down to who can physically survive this contest.

Carol said...

Every time I see Bruce Jenner's face, it scares me. Does he wear lots of makeup??

Carol said...

I think Rob looked good tonight. CA does have a crush on him.

Carol said...

I really am getting a little bored with this dancing.

Anonymous said...

OK here goes...

Ricki & Derek...len was right...fabulous...

JR..very, very good....

Rob...he lost some of that baby fat & he is now a real dancer...& he looks like he is having fun...he deserves to join Ricki & JR
in the finals...

Hope...she is just not a dancer, no matter that she does the dance routine fine...there is always something missing...the judges used the words finesse...that is what she lacks...

Carol said...

The old lady is hanging better than the youngsters. Ricki was great.

Carol said...

I'm worried about JR with that ankle. It's not easy to dance on a sprained ankle. And getting up on his toes will be almost impossible.

Carol said...

Max seems to be trying hard to be a good boy and the judges seem to be pressing him tonight.

Carol said...

You can see the pain on JR's face.

Carol said...

It hardly seems fair that with so much JR attempts, he has such obstacles to overcome. Man, life can be a bitch.

Anonymous said...

They alll did very well with that argentine tango...

My edge still goes to Ricki...but I would not
be disappointed if JR wins...they are so close...

Rob would be the dark horse...but in the end, I still think it comes down to either JR or
Ricki...

It will be interesting to see who the final three are...those are my picks...

Carol said...

I agree with you Coreen. I still fear for JR since this competition does not allow time for healing.

Anonymous said...

All I know is time to find a dancing partner to lose a few pounds...the weight loss first on Kirstie, now Ricki & Rob is so noticable, & losing those pounds seem to make them much better dancers...sharp, precise, fast...more stamina, better attitude...the progress they all have made is amazing...

Bruno is right, tonite they all delivered really good dancing...

Carol said...

They all looked pretty good in the cha cha.

Carol said...

I can't believe that Rob took the top spot in the cha cha. I'll have to go back and look again.

Carol said...

Time for you to join your boys Coreen and me to head to ironing.

Anonymous said...

I'm already there...

Catch you later...I try to do ironing once a week, since I hate to iron every day...

jan said...

I agree with your assessments. However, I still like Hope better than Rob. I think Rob has become a better dancer, but I think the women have to do more than the men as far as dance routines. I think their scores for Rob were inflated.

You are right Coreen, Hope does not have the finesse, but she did tougher routines than Rob

My favorites to win are JR and Ricki - I would be happy with either one winning. I too am worried about JR but he works through the pain - and that is what he has done so many times related to his war injuries.

jan said...

I also agree about Max. He and Hope appear to have developed a better relationship. They seem to each be trying to "corral" the other's strong words. They are doing a lot of touching of each other that they did not do in the first shows. I think she is working to be a better dancer. I think if Derek were her teacher, she would have more "finesse" - I do agree about the finesse part.

jan said...

One thing about Max is that he does make the show more interesting. How many other of the pros do we remember?

jan said...

I wish DWTS would do "profiles" of the pros so we could get to know more about them.

jan said...

My HA is coming and going now. I can go 12 or more hours without ibuprofen and tylenol. John asked me to take some last night before bed because I woke up so early yesterday morning. I am sleeping in a different bed and bedroom now just to keep from waking him up, but he wakes up anyway. I did and I did sleep better and just have a little bit of a HA - so will just take one tylenol this morn. I think I am almost on the other side of it now. My shoulder on the other hand is about the same. Doc asked me to do some light exercises with one lb weights. I need to be more consistent with those.

jan said...

I think we might be the only 3 women is this country who still do ironing. LOL

jan said...

I finished grandson's t-shirt quilt and gave it to him last night. He really liked it. I took pictures, so will post them later. He graduates with his degree in business/accounting Dec 16 so that was a little graduation gift. He is a nice young man. He has a great work ethic so I feel he will do well. He had a scholarship that paid most of tuition - and parents paid the rest of tuition and books. He has had 2 jobs to pay for rent (shared a house with 2 other students) and gas/car insurance expenses. Parents have helped him with other expenses - so he has not had to get student loans. He wants to get a masters in accounting and become a CPA but has decided to wait a year or two to do that. He has 2 job offers. Can you tell, I am proud of him.

jan said...

Better get ready for work.

Carol said...

Jan, you have every reason to be a proud grandma. And can't wait to see the quilt.

Carol said...

I don't know how people avoid ironing. I certainly don't do it because I like to iron. I just don't like wrinkled clothes.

Carol said...

Ut oh, I think JR is going to be in jeoparty.

Carol said...

Anyone see the Sandusky interview by Costas? Pretty creepy and I don't understand why his attorney would let him talk on TV unless they have something up their sleeves.

Sandusky's attorney kinda sounds like a perv himself. He got some 16 year old female client pregnant then married her. Tell me this isn't just a bad dream.

Carol said...

No surprises tonight.

Carol said...

Joy Behar had the prosecutor, Jeff Ashton on her show tonight. He's written a book about the case. He revealed that Casey told her shrink that it was George who actually killed little Caylee. I guess even Jose wasn't going to try to pull that off. He may be a skunk but not that dumb a skunk.

Casey not only threw her dad under the bus..she tried to run over him a couple of times. Casey even thought that no one would believe that Caylee died by accident so she said that her dad murdered Caylee. No wonder George didn't want anything more to do with his daughter.

And psychological tests revealed that Casey was perfectly normal??? So much for psychological tests.

jan said...

No surprise with DWTS tonight. I wonder if Max will be back next season.

jan said...

Better get to bed.

Carol said...

I broke the knucle of my pinkie finger on my right hand today. Not easy to type.

I was going up a couple of stairs here this morning, had a little fumble and slammed my right hand into the door facing. Yeow!

I didn't go to a Doc but I did get our xray guy to take a couple of shots. It's not a bad break and still in good alignment. I just had one of my nurses fashion a splint. Doing anything with my right hand is now almost impossible. My handwritting was bad before. Well..actually it might be a little better since I have to write really slow.

jan said...

Dang Carol. That had to hurt.

jan said...

watched X factor tonight. I tape it and then just listen the contestants songs. I hate all the wrangling by the judges and they repeat a lot of stuff. By taping and zapping through the commercials and other jung, I can condense it into about 45 min. Mucho better.

I have heard good things about the movie about J. Edgar Hoover. Would like to see it.

I have a friend in Richmond Virg who says they are making a movie about Lincoln there now.

jan said...

Off to bed. Had a long work day today and another tomorrow.

Anonymous said...

Gee Carol, now that is some creative way to take a break from using the computer...

Seriously hope you are not in a lot of pain...

Anonymous said...

And looks like the Christmas season is starting...they were putting the mesh frame around the tree outside GE corp HQ today...

Now, when I hear my first Christmas song on the radio I will know it is the official start...around here that could be anyday now...

jan said...

Christmas in the stores begins earlier every year. Pretty soon, it will last all year LOL.

jan said...

Happy Sunday morning. Hope you guys are doing ok. Pretty slim pickins here at the swamp. I went for my early morning walk and it is overcast - which keeps it from getting too cold.

I have been feeling stressed out a lot lately -prob responsible for headaches. So John and I drove to Santa Fe yesterday afternoon to eat dinner. We have a fav little bar and grill there. It was a lovely evening and I needed it. Woke up this morn - without a HA.

jan said...

how is your finger Carol? I get concerned when you are not on here for a couple of days. Just do a one finger type and let me know you are ok.

Carol said...

Rough week last week and it rolled over into the weekend.

I took off Friday since I had pretty much caught up with a lot of my charts and figured I could muster an extra day off to rest my hand.

I do a lot of writing and gripping the pen really hurts..more than typing since I don't have to use the pinky finger that often. It isn't the finger I damaged but the knuckle of the little finger. My hand is swollen and bruised.

So I called in Friday morning and told them I was going to rest my hand. I did some CEUs then took a shower. When I got out of the shower I was walking a short distance to my bedroom and hit a little wet spot on the floor. My foot was moving forward but my big toe didn't resulting in hyperflexing that toe. Couldn't walk too well that day and it bruised up. I just hung around the house.

I'm thinking...dang..what's going on here with all these accidents. I decided I'd be even more careful because I must be having a physical critical week.

Saturday..my big toe felt better..didn't hurt to walk..I did some more CEUs and then got ready to go do my chores. I made several trips up and down the stairs to haul stuff then on my last trip I was carrying down some bird seeds for my feeders.

I was moving very cautiously and when I got the the next to last step my ankle totally rolled on me and I dove down the last two steps. I didn't do any damage with the dive but felt like I mangled my left ankle. No real reason for that to happen. I have no ankle problems and the surface was not uneven.

I had to crawl back in to the camp. I got ice and got in bed and elevated my foot. A friend brought me over some crutches. I couldn't even touch my foot to the ground because that was too painful. To get Maggie out..I had to slide on my butt down the stairs carrying my crutches. I was scared just to move much less tackle those stairs with crutches and a broken hand and with Maggie on her leash. She was afraid of me too.

My foot and ankle are swollen..black and blue but today I can at least touch the floor with it. I still can't bare any weight. I might have to get an xray to make sure I didn't break anything. I'm think it's either a bad sprain or maybe I cracked the lower tip of the fibula.

I never even took off the clothes I had on yesterday. I finally did a few minutes ago. Haven't tried to get in the shower.

It's only a three day week and I can't miss that. If I go..someone will have to wheel me around because I can't manage those crutches for any long distances. I'm sore all over even trying to do that.

Do you realize how hard it is to function..alone.. using crutches? Maggie gets her food but I haven't eaten much. Really haven't had much of an appetite.

What gives folkes? The Universe is trying to tell me something and it isn't that I'm being careless. I'm being mega careful. I do feel that these accidents happen for a reason.

I was really getting into some self pity until I saw..on TV.. this football player who broke his neck and was confined to a WC and this other guy who lost at least half of all of his extremities and is going to climb a mountain. Both of them had very good attitudes.

Carol said...

Anyone had to use crutches? I feel like I just purchased the total gym. Whatever wasn't already hurting is now..my pects..my triceps/biceps and the only good leg I had left.

Carol said...

And I had my veggies tonight..I had a pizza. Did you hear that pizza is now a veggie? Mine actually might come close because I always add more tomato/pizza sauce because most pizzas don't have as much sauce as I desire.

Carol said...

I've been catching up with my CEUs and one of the programs was on the antidepressant effects of coffee. 2-3 cups had significant antidepressant effects in woman. The data came from that long term nurse's study.

4 cups of coffee had even more of an antidepressant effect but with more cups.. it went the other way. It reported that the effect was only found with caffienated coffee..not tea nor sodas nor other products with caffiene.

I tried to get in a couple of extra cups today.

Anonymous said...

Carol, sorry about your rash of misfortunes...

Is your ankle/foot any better...how about your
hand...any improvement...

You know pizza is one of my absolute favs...& that the very best pizza is made here in CT/NY...bar none...

Solar where are you to battle me for pizza
supermacy!!...

Anonymous said...

My oh my...three really great performances in
the freestyle, all very close, three evenly matched pairs, but...edge goes to JR & Carina...& it didn't hurt that she has a wow body & great long legs!!!...they rocked it...

Carol said...

Seems like tonight the judges did their best to knock Ricki out. I guess it's up to the voters.

Anonymous said...

A tie would be appropriate...Ricki & JR...while
Rob came on strong that last couple of weeks,
all three wound up pretty evenly matched & all danced very well, but I still like Ricki & JR better...

Carol said...

I agree Coreen..they all did well but I think Ricki and Derek were as good as the others. I think the judges have been Kardasianed.

jan said...

Just now watching DWTS - taped.

jan said...

Just now getting a chance to check in. I tried this afternoon and could not get in.

Carol, you have had a rash of accidents. Hope that is all now. I too am one of those people who believe nothing happens by accident. Maybe the spirits are keeping you inside to prevent something outside that could be worse. At any rate, might as well lay back and try to enjoy some down time - although that is real hard to do with pain. I hope you have someone that is running errands for you.

jan said...

Interesting info about coffee. I can definitely see that with John. I don't drink coffee - I am a tea person. I am not usually depressed. When I get to feeling down, I try to go swim or walk and that usually works for me. I have read that exercise is a good antidepressant too.

jan said...

Carol, let us know how your injuries are doing.

jan said...

I thought they all did good tonight. This is how I judge it: JR and Karina 1st, Ricki and Derek - 2nd place and the rest is history. I loved JR and Karina's last dance.

Carol said...

Jan..not good. The pain med just wore off..3 am and I feel like I've been run over by a train. I'm pretty sure I broke my right hand..the one I need the most. I did get the rad tech guy.. who does our xrays.. to snap a pic but we had to look at it on the computer in his car. That was a 2x3 inch pic and we both thought that it did look like the 5 distal metacarpal was off a bit. Couldn't put money on it with such a tiny pic.

I pray I didn't break anything on my ankle even though there's no doubt it's a major sprain. I can't ever remember spaining my ankle before..even when I was young and very athletic.

And if the Universe wants me to have down time..bad joke. Now.. even a simple task..like going to the bathroom..getting to the next room.. is monumental. Not to mention..living in a tree house. The latter is always on my mind and I take all steps with the upmost caution.

Carol said...

Maybe the Universe it trying to tell my that tree house days are over?? Even my other place has steps..two of which did a number on my pelvis over 6 years ago.

Interesting reality check of that 'pizza is a vegetable' story that got a lot of play in the media a few days ago...

Did Congress really announce that frozen pizza
is a vegetable?...Not really...

"This is not a fight over pizza. It is instead
a fight about tomato paste. Specifically, it's a fight about how much of the product counts as one serving of vegetables" for purposes of school lunch USDA guidelines...

Right now, tomato paste gets a sort of special treatment under school lunch regluations. Just an 1/8th of a cup of tomato paste is credited w/as much nutritional value as half a cup of
vegetables.

Obama administration guidelines sought to remove that extra credit in valuation & last week Congress blocked that change. Tomato
paste will continue to get outsized credit, with 1/8 cup essentially counted as 4X larger.

But it gets better, read the article to see
just how convulated everything done in D.C.
is...

And just how disengenuous the media is when
it spins a story to its own agenda, whatever
that may be...in this case the reporting of the myth that Congress deemed pizza a vegetable, seems to have started at HuffPo, by its food writer who was railing against this Congress & its lobbyists...in this case large food companies...
No Congress did not declare pizza vegetable

Anonymous said...

And here's the huffpo piece that seems to be
the story that the rest of the media ran with...
Pizza is a Vegetable? Congress defies logic, betrays our children

Anonymous said...

Found an earlier piece headlining 'pizza a vegetable...naturally from NYT...which again
headlined to support an agenda...

And Carol, just so you know ahead of time, I have no issue with trying to provide kids with
good food, but I do take issue with distortion
for a specific agenda from either side, which today makes just about everything
confrontational...both sides do it...& it has
only polarized most people to a point that I am not sure there will be any common ground in the forseeable future...does not bode well for
getting anything done...
At schools, making pizza a vegetable

Carol said...

To further complicate the issue..botanically speaking..a tomato is a fruit. Remember that from a nutrition class.

But...because of some tarrif issues..."The U.S. Supreme Court settled the controversy on May 10, 1893, by declaring that the tomato is a vegetable, based on the popular definition that classifies vegetables by use, that they are generally served with dinner and not dessert (Nix v. Hedden (149 U.S. 304))." Wiki

Whether fruit or vegetable...I love tomatoes...
and pizza must have tomato sauce/paste to be
a real pizza...

Well, it is officially Christmas season...

this morning the Christmas trees were all
up at Silverman's when I came down the hill to the office...& I heard Christmas music on
2 radio stations...One has gone all Christmas
all the time this week...

Reminder seems DWTS finale is a 2 hr show tonite that starts at 9 pm (eastern)...

Carol said...

Coreen..if I order pizza out or if I heat up a Wally World pizza..I add more pizza sauce. Love it. And I've always considered the sauce a couple of veggie servings..not like I'm actually counting. Wally World has a pretty decent pizza in their deli department.

Carol said...

I just got back from radiology. Before I got home my doc called to tell me that I have three fractures. One fracture is of the 5th distal metacarpal..that's the knuckle of my right pinkie finger. That one I did last week. As for the left foot/ankle.. there is one non-displaced fracture of the distal fibula..that's the end of the outside left ankle bone..and another one is of the proximal 5th metatarsal..also non-displaced. That's the bone that goes from the little toe on my left foot to the ankle. It's close to the ankle.

Pain defined each of those places so I felt pretty sure there were fractures.

My ankle/foot is swollen and black and blue but only hurts where the bones are broken. My doc was OK with my therapy..wrap my ankle and wear a firm sole tennis shoe. If I tried to carry a boot around on my ankle..I'd surely break my neck and that's one group of bones I really need to keep intact. I do need the crutches until I can walk without pain.

Those fractures probably beat a serious sprain since I think bones heal faster than the ligaments.

Anonymous said...

Oh Carol you really did mess yourself up...

What do you do to make the fractures heal?...is it just time...

You mentioned some kind of homemade splint for your finger...is that to keep it from moving while it heals...

The same with your foot/ankle...I guess there is no way to really isolate & immobilize either
your hand or foot beyond what you mentioned...

Carol said...

Coreen..the splint on my hand only lasted a few hours the other day. It's my right hand and I use it for everything. At work.. I write the ink out of a pen everyday with that hand. Writing really hurts but I've never been in a job where I could take off for any injuries. Fortunately all my fractures are still attached and not rattling around.

I'll get an inmate to meet me at my vehicle tomorrow and wheel me across the street to my office. It's a pretty good walk and I just can't crutch that far.

I really thank God that they weren't worse.

Well..back to dwts.

Carol said...

Oh rats!

Carol said...

Did anyone notice that Anna seemed to hurt herself at the beginning of that dance with Carson? It was when she was first out with the other two women. She bent back and came forward and went down. She was in pain but kept on dancing. She didn't want to mess up Carson's last dance.

Anonymous said...

No complaints from me...that worked out the way it was supposed to...

A happy ending...

It's a rainy chilly night here...

Carol said...

Well....I did like the final results but wasn't happy that Ricki came in 3rd. I guess she just didn't have the fan base that Rob had.

Well..at least Rob is the only Kardashian that actually accomplished something meaningful. He learned to dance.

Ya know everyone..almost everyone..was coming down on Mc Queary for not having imediately gone after that perv Sandusky back in 2002 when he witnessed him assaulting that young boy. I agreed at first until I had time to try a little empathy.

I'm almost 100% sure that if Mc Queary had done anymore than he did at the time..the guy would have been history back then. At least he got a chance for 10 years of a career and a very slim chance for one in the future.

I'm already hearing defense attorneys on TV call him a liar for having reported what he did back then. Yeah..like there would be any advantage to his having lied about that.

Many of the victims are not going to come forward..too humiliating..too traumatic. And those who have or will..will be subjected to being victims again. So far..there is no info on whether the victim that Mc Queary witnessed has ever been identified or is willing to testify.

Had a busy day yesterday and didn't want to get on here until I saw the finals on DWTS - The finals didn't end here until 10 pm and I wanted to go to bed at 9:30 so just googled it and found out who won. I was glad JR and Karina won. I would have preferred to see Ricki and Derek in 2nd place.

jan said...

Went on line and found some others' comments about the outcome of DWTS and a lot of people did not want Ricky and Derek to win. Some people do not like Derek and some do not like Ricky. Most people were happy that JR and Karina won. So all's well that ends well (or something like that)

jan said...

Carol, I am not surprised to hear of your 3 fractures when you describe your pain. So sorry to hear of this, but I do believe the Universe is telling you something - not sure what.

I had a series of accidents like that in my 50's. I broke a little bone in my foot and sprained an ankle and fell off a chair and slipped on ice and had a bad fall -all in a short period of time. I started wearing good sturdy shoes ALL the time and began to be much more careful at all times. This was a time when I was living alone too and had to use crutches to get up and down to my bedroom.

jan said...

I don't remember having nearly the pain you are having. But we do forget. I am super careful now. If I am carrying anything down steps, I make sure I have a free hand to hold onto a rail. I usually hold onto a rail anyway.

jan said...

One thing that sounds good about your situation Carol - is that you are asking others for some help. I think we all need to do that more often. I am happy when others ask me for help. I like it that others ask me to lend a hand. And it is not that I want people to feel obligated to me. It just makes me feel good.

jan said...

Carol, I am sorry I cannot be there to give you some rides or bring you a meal or whatever you need. I am thinking about you and you are on my list when I say my prayers at night before sleep.

jan said...

Hi Coreen. Interesting discussion about tomato paste and pizza. I am one of those who does not like much tomato sauce on pizza - in fact I prefer pizza with a pesto sauce rather than tomato. I do like tomato sauce on spaghetti.

When I first began working with Early Head Start families (kids are newborns to 3 years) another nurse and I visited the child care centers for the program. They were giving them stuff like burritos for lunch. They were using a catering group and the burritos were ready made and had lots of fat in them and little that was nutritious. We raised a big stink about that and they switched to another catering service that makes the food themselves and always has a vegetable and a fruit (both fresh). It was not more expensive either. I think they need to put grandmothers in charge of school lunches!

jan said...

One of the problems with reporting child abuse is that the laws require someone in an organization to report suspected or witnessed abuse to their supervisor in the organization - not the police. I have taught this content in nursing programs. As people go up the chain of command in a large organization the content of what the actual person saw becomes diluted until it may seem like it is not that big a deal. So McQuery was doing what he was supposed to do - in terms of the letter of the law. The laws need changing.

jan said...

Pizza may have vegetables on it, but it is not a vegetable. It also usually contains lots of calories and fat. But I love pizza - so like chocolate, I would be happy to have it as one of the 4 food groups.

Carol said...

Jan..I didn't know that there were lots of people who didn't care for Ricki and Derek. The three of us here were pretty much in synch in how we felt and we don't always agree on things..often don't. I think of us as a cross section of the population. Then we have John for the guy's point of view.

That DWTS blog felt about the same way we did.
The judges seemed to have something for Rob. He did make a good bit of improvement but don't think he caught up with the other two. Don't know why the Kardashians have that much influence. In fact today I saw where people were getting Kardashian fatigue.

Carol said...

It was fun to see some of the previously booted peps back last night. Some of those booted early were so much better than Rob. Can you imagine how much better they would have been at this point if they had the same amount of time to learn and practice.

Carol said...

My foot felt better today. I went to work and got a W/C lift from my truck to my office and back. My foot got more rest at work than it would have if I had been at home.

Good morning & Happy Thanksgiving everyone...

Carol, hope you are feeling better each day...

Jan, enjoy your family today & wish John a Happy Thanksgiving...

jan said...

Carol, so glad you are feeling better and that they are taking care of you at work.

Carol and Coreen, Happy Thanksgiving to you and to anyone else checking in here.

jan said...

John says "Happy Thanksgiving" to Carol and Coreen.

It is a great day because we are going to #2 son's house and I don't have to cook. Yippee!

jan said...

The View had all 3 couples from DWTS on the other day. it was fun to see all 6. Ricki has a new talk show. She looks great - lost 25 lbs and 2 dress sizes. That should have been enough!

BTW: John liked Rob.

jan said...

I think of the 3 "stars" JR did turn out to be the best dancer in the end. I think this was my favorite season b/c the stars all were non-dancers to begin with.

jan said...

Be careful this weekend Carol. I am saying a prayer that you will REST that foot.

jan said...

My headaches are gone. It is mainly work stress that is causing this. I do not want to quit - so I must figure out how to end the stress.

Carol said...

Happy Thanksgiving to my wonderful friends here and to your famiies.

I am very thankful today that I'm sitting in the living room of my best friend with my foot elevated waiting for dinner. She also happen to be the best cook I know.

Carol said...

Jan..I'm also thankful that your headaches are gone.

I hope you had fun with the fly today. I bet your boys were happy with that Dallas game. It was exciting. I think I remember you saying that they were fans.

jan said...

Carol, so glad to hear your best friend is cooking dinner and you have your foot elevated. Does not hurt she is a good cook.

jan said...

Went to middle son's house today. Oldest son, DIL's, and several grandchildren there. So good to be with all of them. One of nicest Thanksgivings ever. DIL's parents there too so John and I had someone our age there too. Several played games outside and inside. Watched several football games. Fortunately, their LR, Din Room and Kitch are all one big room so we were all together. I love this contemporary style so we can all be together at times like this. The men helped cook and clean up too. Yaaay guys!

Yes Carol, the boys still like the Cowboys but not their fav team any longer. They like the Denver Broncos now. I think they also like the 49r's.

Their fav team is OU Sooners. (College)

jan said...

They like LSU and the Saints too. They remember their days in Louisiana. Terry is on FB with Gary and Bobby Craig.

Carol said...

Jan..we're suiting up against each other tomorrow in the LSU/Arkansas game. It ought to be a good game.

Carol said...

How was your Thanksgiving Coreen?

Carol said...

Jan..I'm happy that you have such good large family get togethers. I miss all my family and the holiday seasons are sad without them but I strained last night to try to remember any really pleasant holiday get togethers we had.

Mom..as much as she liked having her family around..alway got so stressed out. There was always some drama going on and she was usually involved. The only good memory I could dredge up was the food..it was always good.

I guess our family wasn't alone in having stressful family get togethers. It was part of the theme of both The Middle and Modern Family last night.

jan said...

Carol, we will definitely be watching that LSU/Ark game.

jan said...

Carol, interesting thing about families. We had little conflict during get togethers. Even when I am upset with my sister, cannot let her know it. We were never truthful about anything we felt that was negative about each other. I don't know if that is a good thing or not. My dad always let us know when he was upset with us but the rest of us sort of hid our upset or angry feelings toward each other. I think we were afraid of either hurting feelings or retaliation - don't know which - maybe both.

Carol said...

Hook um horns. Is that what you say? Proud last minute win against those Aggies tonight. And will this be their last meeting now that the Aggies are going to the SEC? I wonder if that is a smart move??

jan said...

Carol, yes - Hook em HOrns! Thanks for posting.

Happy to see that Thanksgiving went well...Here it was a quiet day, no chaos or trauma...We had dinner at Cinzano's, where we go regularly...the restaurant was almost full, not as busy as in some past years...but food is always excellent & service too...None of us ate turkey though...

It was a brisk sunny day, & the rest of this
weekend is turning out even better...already
warmer, sunny & calm...some reports say it will
reach 60s....so far November is turning out
really nice...after that Halloween snow disaster...Will try to get the last 7 windows
cleaned, last weekend did 14 & maybe wash the
cars before I have to shut the outside hose
for the winter...

Oh generator update...so backed up that not
scheduled for installation til the end of January, in the meantime, they orderd the propane gas tank & the excavator will dig the
hole when the tank arrives...hopefully in the next couple of weeks...weather does not show
any really cold coming this way for awhile so
that should be ready by the time a generator
arrives...

Catch up later...

Carol, keep resting that leg...Jan, hope you
get that stress out of your work so those
headaches don't return anytime soon...

jan said...

Coreen, so good to hear about your Thanksgiving. Sounds great! So good to hear about your good weather. I hope your generator makes it before any bad weather comes. A good idea to get that propane gas tank.

jan said...

Our weather here is great. We had a little rain last night and some early this morn. It is overcast and cool here. I am going for my walk soon.

We are going to take it easy today. I think we are going to buy one of those prelit christmas trees. I am just not into a lot of work. Probably put a few ornaments I made on it many years ago. We have not put up a tree for years, but this year I think I would like one.

jan said...

Tomorrow I am taking 2 granddaughters to see the vampire movie- Breaking Dawn, part I. I read all the books and enjoyed them. One of their birthdays is dec 1 - so we will also take them out to dinner too and give her a gift. I have seen the previous movies. They are ok - I enjoyed the books more.

jan said...

Carol, I saw both the Middle and MF - both really funny. The Middle was one of the best they have done. I loved it when the sisters were fighting. That was a great scene. I love Molly Shannon. We liked her on SNL too. I like the Middle better this season - I think the writing is better.

jan said...

Carol, I posted some pics of family on Facebook - Bill, Terry, and DIL's and some of the grandkids. Don't know if you go on facebook anymore. If you want to see the pics just look on my wall.

jan said...

I see where they are also doing American versions of "Girl with the Dragon Tatoo." The ones we saw a few months or year ago were made in Sweden and I think with subtitles. It is coming out soon. there are several movies I want to see. People are saying J. Edgar is good.

jan said...

Hi Carol, Let the Games begin! LOL

jan said...

The LSU/AR game is just beginning

jan said...

John wants to know if you want a little wager on this game.

Carol said...

I'll skip that wager Jan. I think it's anyone's game. We really don't have a really great QB.

Carol said...

We do have a good defense and special teams. I'd like to see Jarret Lee back. He carried us at the beginning of the season but then he had those 3 back to back interceptions and hasn't been back since.

Carol said...

They call him the Honey Badger! The dude that ran back the punt for a TD.

Carol said...

This is one of the most exciting games of this year.

Carol said...

I have been more worried about this game than I was the Alabama game.

Carol said...

Hooray for the Bayou Bengals! Definitely a fun game. Sorry John. Not!

jan said...

Carol, congrats on LSU winning the game with ARK.

John says, There is always next year.

jan said...

Am already dreading Monday and still have 2 days off yet. Never satisfied.

jan said...

I went to the fabric store at 11 am today thinking I would get a few things for next quilt. What a zoo! I had to take a number to get some fabric cut - there were over 100 ahead of me. The line to the checkout snaked around several aisles. I hear someone say they had been waiting 2 hours. I put my stuff back and left.

jan said...

Anyone else have any shopping adventures. I do not like to shop at christmas. All my grandkids now like money or gift cards and that is fine with me. John is same way.

Carol said...

Jan..I always like giving money or gift cards. It used to be thought of as a lazy thoughtless gift but if I'm going to spend money..I want someone to get what they really need or want. And I heard that this year the gift card or money is the IN thing.

Carol said...

I wouldn't think that the fabric store would have been really busy today. Were they having deep discounts also?

I going to have to do my grocery shopping tomorrow..alone. I just can't ask someone to help even though I have had offers.

I've been trying to plan my strategy. Maybe early Sunday would be a better plan if I want a closer parking place and a motorized shopping cart. Hoping the other crips don't shop early on Sundays.

The biggest challenge will be getting the bags of groceries up the steps.

jan said...

Carol, please ask for some help.

jan said...

The fabric store was having black friday sales and they were good. But they have good sales throughout the year - so I didn't care that much.

jan said...

just made a trip for nothing. In this day of expensive gasoline, hate to make a wasted trip.

jan said...

Carol, I like gift cards too. None of us can afford to give gifts that someone will not use or want. I remember my mother would give my sis and I something that I would not wear and did not want to hurt her feelings so would wear it a couple of times and then just give away or put in yard sale. When my grandkids were little, I would come to Alb for Christmas and go shopping with my 2 DILs and they knew what the kids wanted and their sizes - so we had a day of shopping but it was fun - we always had a fun lunch - usually with margaritas - at a place in the mall -or next door to mall then finished shopping a little tipsy but with plenty of time to sober up before the drive home.

jan said...

My former DIL is coming for lunch today. She and my son divorced about 12 years ago. She now lives in Phoenix. They married when he was 20 and she was 19 - they were preg. with oldest Granddaughter. They were married 18 years. I grieved when they divorced because I loved her too. We still stay in touch. Never talk about his 2nd family.

Carol said...

Did you have a nice lunch today Jan? It's nice that you have a good relationship with your former DIL.

I got up early and did my shopping this morning. My strategies worked. The store was quiet and there were plenty of motorized carts available. The most difficult part was getting the groceries up the stairs here. I loaded half at a time in a large garbage bag and dragged them up.

I'm glad I got that over with. A cold front just moved through and it's pouring outside. These temp and barometric pressure changes are not pleasant on the bones.

jan said...

Carol, so glad you got your grocery shopping done and groceries in before the rain. That was good timing.

I am taking it easy today.

jan said...

Yesterday was super busy. I fixed lunch for former DIL and granddaughter and great granddaughter. They are a trio - the blondest blondes (natural) you have ever seen. Gr GD will be 2 in Jan. She is a ball of fire. Just the age that everything in sight is enticing. I do have several books and toys for her but she tired of these quickly. She spied the New Orleans beads I have hanging on a hall tree so got them down for her. She knew just what to do with them - all 7 pair went around her neck.
